Are video games too easy?

I just read a little article in the latest Game Informer magazine, and they asked that exact questions to different guys. One said yes, and one said no, both for various reasons. Here's my take on the question:

Games are not too easy. Yes, there are some that anyone with 3 fingers and one eye can finish, but there are plenty of games out there for the hardcore gamer. There are also a lot of games that find a nice balance between the two.

One thing people need to remember is that there are different types of gamers in the market. There are 6 year olds who can't handle the intricacies of a game like Metal Gear Solid. For them, something like Lego Star Wars works out perfectly. Even for someone like myself, a game like Lego Star Wars works out. There are times when all I want to do is pop in a game and play. I want to have the experience of Star Wars through this game, and I don't feel like battling for hours on end to do that.

With that said, there are times when I want to challenge myself with a game like Metal Gear. However, I don't want every gaming experience to be as challenging as a game like this.

The hardcore gamer needs to remember that not everyone is as good as they are. Take Madden for example. Someone who has played Madden for 8 straight years, to them the game is pretty easy. They can pick the game up and get going very easily. But is it really an easy game to get in to? I say no.

Imagine that you've never played Madden before in your life and you pick it up for the very first time today. It's not as simple as hitting A and then throwing the ball to your open B receiver anymore. Now you have to worry about the defense calling an audible, do you want to run hot routes with your receiver, do you yourself want to audible, you can control your lead blockers now, and the list goes on. I don't know about you, but that's a lot to handle at once, and it's not easy to pick up.

To sum it all up, no, games are not too easy. Some are easy, some are average, and some only a certified gaming genius can get through. That's the way things should be, because that's the type of market we're dealing with. Some people play for fun, some people play 24/7. A good mix of difficulty is important and it's the only way you avoid alienating a certain demographic of gamers.

  • I'm with you aside from I think they should charge less for easier games, as they're usually shorter and easier to make.
